No matter the setting, from a brick and mortar casino in the center of downtown Las Vegas or an online poker room visited from the comfort of your armchair, the allure of gaming and gambling holds a growing attraction for many people. This attraction has been further propagated and highlighted by the televising of the World Series of Poker, as well as the various celebrity poker matches and high stakes games that have made their way onto TV screens and schedules all over the country. From most points of view the increased interest in the gaming industry and participation in such game is no problem. It’s entertaining, and a strong source of income for many room owners. The problems occur when more money is spent by a player than the player can afford, which is a bad situation both for the player and for the poker room which can no longer count on that player’s business in the future.

For many people who enjoy games of chance and gambling on their abilities they feel like they know how to control the game and have a system that will help keep them at the top of the pack. Sometimes this system works, but usually only for a while and everyone has their dog days when their luck is down and they just can’t seem to get anywhere with the cards. During times like this some people are able to set a stop point and quit while they’re still ahead, but for many others the need to continue to play is just too strong and the feeling that their system can’t fail them is powerful. With each hand there is the thought that maybe this hand things will turn around. This attitude can cost the player more time and resources than they can afford and underlies the importance of knowing what your limits are and how to set them so that you don’t fall into the trap of continued financial and temporal loss.

No matter the environment that you choose to play in, the wise gambler will set their limits -before- the game begins, even before they walk out the door or log into the room they have in mind. This is the best time for determining such things as limits can be set with a clear head uninfluenced by the excitement of the moment or the opinions of spectators or other table members. The question is one of how much one can afford to lose, and refusing to put any more cash into the game after that point. Some people manage this by taking only cash with them and leaving the rest of their wallet at home, or, when playing online, using a credit card with a specific limit on it that will not allow them to exceed a particular amount in deposits. No matter what method you use, make sure that it is one you can stick to, and do not deviate from it. If you once go around your preset limits you can be sure you will do it again and very quickly find yourself in trouble that is deeper than you want to play.

No matter the limit you set remember that the point of the limit is to keep the game from becoming a drain on your life instead of an enjoyable form of entertainment. It is easy to want to keep betting when you’re either winning high or losing hard, both extremes an invitation to try your luck just one more time. The smart gambler knows his limits and will respect them, keeping the game an entertainment and not a monster.

Many movies have made the art of the poker tell famous, from finger tapping to breath holding every player has responses based on what cards are in their hand and how they feel they are doing in the game. The best players are capable of hiding these tells, or using them as part of a bluff in order to convince the other players at the table that they have a better or worse poker hand than they actually come. The mastery of such skills marks a true professional and is often the difference between winning and losing a round just as much as the ranks of cards and combination of hands.

In real life games around a poker table these tells and bluffs are much easier to read as they include not only the play that someone makes but their posture, facial expressions, talk and even the way they hold their cards. Online gaming lacks some of these tells as players do not physically see each other, only the plays that come across the board. By providing increased anonymity the online environment also helps to make bluffing easier in many ways by eliminating some of the most telling poker tells. Yet, the observant will find that even in an online format there are certain actions and playing patterns that can serve just as well as any physical tell with just as much accuracy.

The best thing a good online player can do is the same thing a good offline player does, which is to develop your powers of observation and pay close attention to the actions of your table mates as well as their timing and their speech.

The following are some of the most common internet tells. This list is, but no means, complete, but it may provide directions to think in and clues to figuring out other tells that are not here listed. Keep in mind that one of the most sure tells regardless of medium is any break in the natural rhythm of play.

Common online tells:

Quick to respond. A player that reacts very quickly to any action by another player is generally holding either a very good hand or a very poor one. In the case of a poor hand this player will be quick to fold and to remove themselves from the potential of losing more than his ante bid in any round. A high handed player will raise bets quickly without taking much time to think about the situation or what might be held by the other players on the table. Betting in a regular rhythm will help to keep your pacing normalized and remove this tell.

Slowness to respond. A player that is very slow to respond to any action is very often a poor player or a new player. Both tend to make mistakes in their play that can be quickly taken advantage of by a more veteran player. You must be careful with this assumption though as very slow play can also be sign of a bad connection or a player that is frequently away from the computer or playing in multiple poker rooms.

Auto play. In many poker rooms there is an option for auto play. When this option is selected the computer is given specific instructions to continue to raise or lower the bid based on the actions of others. Play is always automatic in these cases, falling as quickly as the previous player has made their move.

Betting and hand patterns. If you fall into the trap of consistently betting the same way or always folding in certain circumstances this can become an online tell and lead to trouble for you. For instance if you always use the same size bet, or always fold at a certain pot amount this becomes a personal pattern and will give away the strength of your hands to the observant.

In the end a good online poker player, like an offline player, will come to develop a ‘poker face’ keeping his or her tells to themselves and thus strengthening their own game.

Pot odds is a poker term that is used to describe the ratio of the size of the poker pot, created by both the starting ante, where applicable, and the bids that have gone in during play, to the cost of calling the hand and bringing out the reveal. Ideally, as a player, you want to capture the highest pot odds possible as that number represents how much your winnings are as compared to what you had to put in towards those winnings.

In order to figure the pot odds of any given hand you must know first how much has been donated into the pot. An example might be a $100 pot, created by the ante and bets of four people. In our example the cost to call the bet and end the game is $10. For this example the pot odds would then be $100/$10 or 10 to 1 odds, which is the much more common expression. Likewise a game where the pot is $1000 and it costs $100 to call the bid the odds would also be 10 to 1. Ideally you want to take a pot where the pot odds are as high as possible, a 10 to 1 pot being much more desirable than a 2 to 1 pot.

The reasons why knowing the pot odds is important is that these odds may play into whether you choose to fold or to pursue a hand and how far to carry a bluff in any given hand. To further explore this usage of pot odds consider a poker hand where you have a 20% chance of pulling the cards from the deck that you need on the final deal to have the highest possible poker hand. In order to make the call for the pot the pot needs to contain at least five times what the requirement to call is. In this case you want at least a five to one pot, with odds even higher than that being desirable, if you can get them, for maximum pay out on the cash you’ve already donated to the pot. If the risk to reward ratio is too low then you have to reconsider what you’re going to do and whether you should stick with the hand or fold before adding anything further.

The pot odds also come into play when you are judging how far to push a bluff. In order for the bluff to be worth your while the odds of a holding successful bluff must be less than the odds of the pot. If the odds are reversed then it is not worth the effort as the risk to reward ratio is skewed against you. Beware of the trap of bluffing in a high risk situation where there is very little gain that you can make. This is a trap that is most common stumbled into by inexperienced players and can be a very expensive trap if it becomes a habit. A high risk bluff is going to get called often, and for the times when it does not get called the finances that are gathered are not enough to make up for what is lost.

Keep in mind that playing pot odds is only one factor of a much larger game play. Pot odds are a mathematical ratio, and do not bring into account the specifics of the game that you are playing. In some games figuring out the pot odds may even be complete futile as the odds may change significantly with each card played down. Knowing the pot odds may not guarantee a win, but this knowledge goes a long way towards being part of your tactics and strategy for a good win, and a sucessful match.

Making mistakes is not difficult when you first start playing poker, because there are so many things that you must keep straight in your head. Often, the mistakes are not really going to affect the game play for yourself or others - but other times you may make a mistake that causes problems for yourself or other players at the table. We are human and all make mistakes, but it’s always best to avoid making them. Here are some of the common mistakes made by newbies to the world of poker.

Playing with friends and family members before engaging in competitive poker games is advised for beginners. Generally, those who play poker in a casino or tournament have very serious intentions and do not like it when new players participate and make very common errors. If you are going to play casino poker as a beginner, we recommend sticking to the low betting tables until you are familiar with poker etiquette and game play. Once you feel that you have mastered these items, it’s time to move on and head for the big time!

Don’t lose control of your emotions.
New players at poker parlors often tend to throw tantrums, curse and even threaten the dealer. These are signs that veteran poker players can use to identify and avoid newbies. Most casinos will simply not tolerate these behaviors, asking patrons who behave in such ways to leave immediately. Because of the high stakes involved in the game of poker, it is natural to become upset while playing. However it is necessary and required that players conceal their emotions during play. If you lose your temper or show other negative emotions at a poker table, the results will be disastrous, and the new player will look bad to others involved with the game.

Don’t bet out of turn.
It is very common for new players to bet out of turn. The key to remember is that you don’t bet until the player to your right has acted. Acting out of turn could prove advantageous to the player at your left, especially when you choose to raise or to fold. This is probably one of the most commonly made mistakes by new players, but it can have a very definitive effect on the outcome of the hand.

Know what the bet is.
Stay aware of what the bet is when it is your turn. It’s important that you understand that in a limit game, the amount of the bet normally doubles after the flop. Many new casino players are not aware of this, and so they are unaware of what the bet is on their turn. If you want to appear as a serious player, pay attention to the amount of the current bet.

Folding instead of checking.
If you choose to check instead of fold after a flop and everyone else follows your lead you will be able to see the following card for free. This is also true if everyone else has checked - you should also check. Folding early will take you out of game play, and when the free card could greatly improve your current hand you need to truly determine that this is the right move for you.

Forgetting to protect your cards.
If, at the poker table, your cards mix at all with another players cards the hand will be dead. Thus, it is extremely important to protect your cards. Some techniques suggested are placing your hand or even your chips on top of your cards to prevent the mixing of cards. After all, you wouldn’t want this to happen to you as the result of another player’s action when you are about to win a major pot.

Throwing chips into the pot.
In order to verify that your bet is correct, you need to place your bet on the table in front of you until it can be checked by the dealer. The dealer will then place your chips into the pot. Many new poker players are not aware of this requirement, and it makes their newness very obvious to everyone at the casino table.

Throwing a winning hand into the discards.
Never throw your hands into the discards when a player declares a winning hand. It is far better to wait and to see the actual hand be declared the winner by the dealer. Sometimes, it is the case that the one who thought they won didn’t. In this case, the next best hand will be declared the winner. If you choose to discard your hand too soon, it will be impossible to consider your hand for it’s worth. Patience is a virtue, especially in poker.

Making mistakes at the poker table is unavoidable for most new players; everyone has made a mistake from time to time. The mistakes listed above are some of the most common mistakes made by newer players primarily as a result of little experience playing competitive poker. Understanding the etiquette and game play is the first step to becoming a successful poker player. After you have played for a while, these things will become easier. Always take time to observe a new table before joining in game play at a casino in order to get an idea of the expectations.

Playing poker is a tremendous amount of fun, and once you are familiar with how the game is played and what the rules are you can be a great player! It’s a good idea to know how the game is played and what behaviors are considered acceptable. As with most casino games, there is a specific set of etiquette expected among players. While not everyone uses the same strategy or style in poker, serious players do abide by an unspoken code of conduct when at the table. Most of the above tips were presented in order to make you a better player and to increase your chances of winning while enabling you to not give advantages to other players. As you become a seasoned player, you will begin to understand these and other rules of the game. We hope though, that you are not learning from your own mistakes.

Learning the different hands of poker is one of the hardest thing for any new poker player to learn. Memorizing the basic hands allows players to become quickly accustomed to any particular variety of poker, once they learn the specific rules that apply to that variety. Overall, poker is a pretty simple game, and once you learn what the basic hands are you are well on your way to winning more often. By learning the hands, you are using your knowledge to your advantage while increasing the chance of being successful.

A poker hand can refer to any of the following:

The cards a player holds in his or her hand.

Five cards which have a particular value assigned to them, that are held in a players hand.

A combination of five cards which are assigned a certain value, like a flush which is five cards of the same suit.

A round of play that consists of a deal, betting and maybe even a showdown.

It may seem that you will never learn all of the terms associated with a hand of poker, but once you begin to play the game you will understand the meaning quickly. It is easier to learn poker by watching and playing that by simply reading about it, and once you begin playing you are sure to understand why that is true.

The good news is that there is a standard set of rules that will always apply to poker hands, no matter which variety you are playing. Here are some of those basic rules:

Individual cards are ranked to evaluate hands that have to pairs or other special combinations. Cards are assigned a rank in order from A (high) King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 (low). In ace-to-five and ace-to-six lowball games, Ace is the lowest ranked card.

Suits are not assigned a specific value in any variety of poker. Suits are simply utilized in order to determine whether or not a hand fits the necessary combination for a winning hand, like a flush or a straight flush. Generally, if two players have the same ranking hand in different suits, the pot will be split and the hand considered a tie. If you are using a high card to randomly select the dealer, you might use suit to determine the high card suit.

The ranking in poker is done in this way; first the hands are ranked by their category and then the individual cards are tanked. Because of this, even the lowest qualifying hand in a particular category still ranks higher than a high hand in a lower category. So, the lowest rank two pair hand defeats all hands with one or no pairs. When there are only two hands, in the same category, the card rank will be used in order to determine the winner of the tie.

Poker hands always contain five cards. When more than five cards are dealt to the players at the beginning of a hand, there are still only five cards used to rank hands according to the poker game’s rules and to compare the hand of one player with those of the other players in the game in order to determine who the winner is for the round.

The rank of cards is never determined by the dealing order of the cards.

It is imperative that you memorize the information in this list about the ranking of poker hands before you consider joining in a table poker game and especially any type of tournament. Once you have successfully memorized the list, and how they rank in comparison you will be prepared for friendly poker with your friends. You will still need a bit more practice before you are ready to hit the casinos.

Here is the commonly accepted ranking of hands, as it applies to most varieties of poker:

Royal flush.
A royal flish is five cards in a sequence of the same suit, starting from the Ace down to the ten.

Straight flush.
Any five cards in sequence and of the same suit.

Full house.
A full house is a hand with three cards of one rank and two of another.

Flush.
A flush is five cards of the same suit.

Straight.
A straight is five cards in sequence

Three of a kind.
A three of a kind is three cards of the same rank.

Two pair.
A two pair is two cards of one rank and two of another.

One pair.
A hand with one pair includes two cards of the same rank.

No pair.
Also known as a high card hand.

Knowing the hands and where they rank is what poker is all about. Once you have this information down in your mind you’ll easily be able to work on the bluffing aspect, and playing different variants of poker. As long as you know the rank of the hand you are holding, you’ll be able to play the best game possible. When players don’t go into the game of poker with a strong understanding of which hands out rank which, that is when they end up in trouble, especially when they are playing for money!

The best way to learn the hands of poker is to play with friends or family who are experienced. At first it might seem complicated and even a bit frustrating, but the more you play the easier it will be to see the hands forming before you even have all the cards together. Poker is truly a game that needs to be played again and again to be good, and to be able to strategize for the best results. While poker is said to be a game of chance, it’s also about knowing what to do with the cards you’ve been dealt. Because there is no way to know what you’ll be dealt, or what the other players at the table will have in hand, you need to be able to think of every possible hand, and then create the highest ranking hand possible with what you’ve got. This takes practice, and it won’t just come to you over night. So, when you are trying to learn the hands, get a computer game, or get together with friends and family and practice visualizing what hands you can put together to win the whole pot! Practice, practice, practice and soon you’ll be doing it without really thinking too hard!

People who play poker generally want to be good poker players. Most will pay close attention to the way that their friends strategize and use video games in order to improve their skills. But even the most attentive person may still lack much of the skill and confidence needed to succeed at casino poker tables. Playing with friends or family members may be another approach used to develop poker-playing process. Poker requires concentration, strategy and a lot of confidence. If any of those three things are missing, the outcome will not be as great as it could be for the player. Therefore, someone who wants to play casino poker might want to give some thought to taking poker lessons. This is a fantastic way to improve skill and build confidence in your playing ability. Poker lessons teach players a combination of skills that will help them to be successful and to take the pot a lot more often.

Some might fear being made fun of by friends if they announce that they have chosen to take poker lessons, but that’s not a good reason to not do it! Some people will probably tell you that poker is a waste of your time and energy, but if its something that you would like to learn then it is definitely worth your time to take lessons and improve your skills. You should expect that some of your friends will laugh when you tell them, because they don’t understand the attraction of poker. But when poker gets your interest, and keeps you entertained, you should definitely try to learn as much as you possibly can about the game. While taking lessons seems like such a huge time commitment, realize that they don’t take a lot of time from your busy schedule and that if you don’t want to tell anyone you are taking them you won’t have to! You can schedule them around your lunch break, your weekend or during times that work for your schedule. All of the sudden, you will probably find that those weekend poker games with friends have gotten a LOT more interesting (and maybe even a little profitable!) Who will be laughing then? You will! Because all of your friends that giggled at the mention of poker lessons will be passing you their poker money!

Is your confidence in your poker skill set what is keeping you from considering poker lessons? Have you heard them advertised and thought, not me? Local colleges and casinos often offer these poker lessons and maybe you are afraid to take them because you don’t understand a lot of the game? There’s no need to be afraid! All lessons require is an interest in learning something new, and who doesn’t want to do that. You will find that taking poker lessons puts you ahead of the gang on Friday nights, and increases your enjoyment of the game because all of the sudden you don’t have to think as much or work as hard. Realize that once you take the poker lessons, you have that knowledge for life! You will learn to be a successful poker player, and to gain a new appreciation for the game. You will learn the history of the game, strategies that are time honored and how to succeed! Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Perhaps you would feel more comfortable if you made a quick call before signing up to explain your level of skill, and to make sure that you would make a good addition to the class. This is common, and the instructor probably expects these calls and is ready to welcome you on board! If it turns out that you still don’t think that your skills are appropriate for a particular class, keep looking! There are many different types of poker lessons, and even more instructors. Something will meet your skill level and confidence level. If you are on the phone with an instructor who thinks a particular class would not be good for you, then ask for recommendations. They will probably be aware of the other offerings and may point you in a better direction.

If cash is what is keeping you from taking poker lessons, that’s no excuse! Why? Because most casinos will offer FREE poker lessons in order to get better players into their casinos. Most of the time, the instructors are good players from the casino or even the casino dealers. Think of the advantage that you would have if the dealer of the poker table is telling you the right way to strategize and to play! You can have confidence knowing that you are working with the poker experts. And, since the lessons are free you really have nothing to lose by participating. People of all different skill sets go to these classes, so don’t be afraid that you will look stupid or inexperienced. After all, unless you win EVERY game every time you still have room for improvement in your poker playing, right? Remember that the free casino poker lessons are given in groups, so you will not be alone! And since they are free, you can go as many times as you want until you have developed what you think you need to learn. Try several casinos or instructors if you’d like. The worst that could happen is that you find new friends who share your interest in poker!

A quick glance through a local phone book will help you to find a professional who offers private poker lessons. More than likely, private instruction will be pricey. But after just one lesson, you are likely to become a better player, and you probably won’t need more than a few to get your started. Private instruction will focus on etiquette, strategy, game techniques and bluffing. These are the keys to learning to be a great poker player. If just one lesson boosts your confidence in your skills, then it’s worth it! And you will find that with private instruction, you are out at the casinos winning more often and improving your skills even further.

Sure, poker lessons might seem silly at first. You might be the joke of the weekly poker game if you announce you’re considering taking them, but when you just need more practice and someone else to play with - they are just the right answer for you. Poker is a form of entertainment and a source of enjoyment for those who are good players. Nothing can teach you to have that kind of fun, but poker lessons can teach you how to be a better player so that you can have even more fun! You will learn to succeed at poker, and you will notice that your confidence immediately starts to increase with the first lesson. Poker depends on luck, but just being a part of the game gives you some chance of winning. Taking poker lessons is just one way that you can definitely increase your chance of winning!

During a session at the Hold’em tables, one of the most significant elements that differentiates winners from losing players is the caliber of the starting hands they’re dealt and how they are played. While its true that any hand might transform into a winning hand when the board cards are turned over, there are certain hands that have a much better chance to improve than others.

Notwithstanding, exactly what really is a good starting hand varies based on the table situation. The table conditions includes; the number of players, the betting limits you’re playing, and whether you are playing regular cash games or tournaments should all vary your starting hand selection.

The number of opponents at the table:
On a table with a lot of players it’s more important to have a premium starter, as lower pairs and other susceptible hands are more likely to be out-drawn by overcards held by one of the other players who pay to see the flop. As the number of players decrease there are fewer cards to compete against, and there is less chance of being out drawn. When playing in a short-handed game, that is one with few opponents in the hand, you are generally able to play with somewhat weaker hands than when there are many players. When playing head-to-head a hand consisting of as little as a pair of pocket sevens or eights may be the winning hand and may be worth calling or even raising.

The limits you are playing:
Here we are not talking about the stakes, but the type of game you are playing; no limit, pot limit, or fixed limit games. When playing no limit it might be very costly to play drawing hands, especially when another player with a solid starting hand is partial to making heavy raises pre flop. On the flip side, a fixed limit table with a lot of of people calling is sometimes the best place to try and draw out a big hand, since you typically have to commit less chips to see some more cards.

Tournaments vs regular games:
When playing tourneys you need to consider the tournament as a whole more so than each single hand. In tournament play, while the number of players is still of importance, things such as the size of your chip stack and raising blinds might often influence how you play your hand. In ring games players can always buy more chips, therefore the quality of your starting hand stays more or less consistant.
To sum it up; adept players understand that various game situations define what a good starting hand is, and vary their playing style accordingly.
